Sunset Diaries

Sunset Diaries is a hodgepodge of photographs, personal recordings, words I live by or was struck by and other random things I want to remember in the future and had the time, patience and presence of mind to post. I am Oli - a rambling, crazy, somewhat idealistic bubble of a person who frequently bursts into song, finds joy in simple things like children, performing, good conversations, learning, quality time with family and friends, musical theater, a good book, beaches, art, and all things made by God. —New Years Eve

What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve

by Ryan and Oli

Ryan and I both love Zooey Deschanel! We decided to record this after watching her cover with JGL. Of course, Ryan only agreed to play guitar while I sing. But after a month of steady persuasion, he finally recorded the guy parts! Of course the song is one and a half months too late but that’s okay! :)

—Part of that World

Olipoli’s Disney Princess Project Entry No. 2: Part of that World from The Little Mermaid

I have memories of singing this song infront of my relatives back when I was a little kid. I remember I was even wearing a Little Mermaid shirt then. Several years later, I still have the time of my life singing it… for my own pleasure and sometimes, for little kids in children’s parties (hence the picture of me during one of my gigs with Clowning Around. I was the Ariel who stayed too long under the sun). It’s quite nice to know that little kids today still know this song! A true Disney classic indeed!

—Astonishing (cover)

Astonishing from Little Women

Recorded this one last January. I promised myself that I won’t put any disclaimers to any recordings that I will post here, but I feel that this one is an exception. Obviously, this song is way beyond what my singing abilities can handle, but I went ahead and recorded it anyway for the following reasons: 1) I love the song. 2) It was stuck in my head days after watching Repertory Philippine’s run of Little Women, 3) Hence, I was singing it non-stop, 4) So I decided to learn the song, 5) And, in the process, record it (I often record myself while learning songs to check if I’m singing it correctly or what not. Needless to say it took me days recording this one and I still couldn’t get it completely right.) This was my best effort. Pardon the longest disclaimer ever.

—Belle - Reprise (oli)

Olipoli’s Disney Princess Project Entry No. 1: Belle (Reprise) from Beauty and the Beast

Due to the lack of time (and maybe patience?) to record a full song, I have decided to start my Project with a short reprise first. Belle didn’t have a full solo song in the movie unlike the other Disney princesses but she had many beautiful moments. This was one of them, I think, and it reflects a lot of my own sentiments as well.

Details of the project here.

—Wild Horses (cover)

My friend, Gabby Medina (whose voice is just so beautifully soulful), and I singing a cover of a cover by Alicia Keys and Adam Levine of The Rolling Stones song, Wild Horses. What a beautiful song.

It’s is said to be about Mick Jagger’s old girlfriend, Marianne Faithfull. The story goes something like Mick and Keith Richards both went to see Marianne in the hospital. She was brought in due to an overdose of drugs and alcohol and almost died. The two of them were standing by her side when she came to and one of them said, “Marianne, we thought we’d lost you.” But Marianne replied, “Not even ten wild wild horses could drag me from this world!”

“Wild horses, couldn’t take me away…”

Ofcourse, I’m not so sure how true or accurate this story is. Nevertheless, it’s such a beautiful song and I hope we did it some justice… well, for sure Gabby did. Enjoy. :)
